Facial Toner Review With Kiehl’s – Garnier – Liz Earle

If you ask me about the facial toner I use with my daily routine, I would say hands down my Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic. BUT, I have been trying different ones out recently in various price ranges. Facial toners or lotions, whatever you want to call them, can be confusing! There’s loads out there and all preaching to do similar benefits we want to hear.

Refreshing, hydrate, soothe, remove impurities and revitaliseA few benefits that these toners claim to help with.

Kiehl’s – Ultra Facial Toner / / Garnier – Micellar Cleansing Water / / Liz Earle – Instant Boost Skin Tonic

What is a toner?

Well, toners help to remove make-up and impurities from the face. If you have dry skin then toners can help to restore moisture in the skin after cleansing. This is also considered to be better than a facial bar soap. Bar soap has high pH levels that can change the balance in your skin and potentially promote bacteria which can lead to increased acne. Now toners can support all type of skins, dry, sensitive or combination skin. Choosing the right one for you may take time to find if you don’t know which skin type you have….. So I would recommend going to your local beauty store, where they would be able to analysis your skin. Toners can be used as part of your daily regime, so in the mornings to refresh you and in evenings to remove dirty and make-up from the day.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Toner

So Kiehl’s facial toner has a creamy white tint and does’t actually smell of much which I find unusual because I automatically compare it to Liz Earle which is water like and floral scented and fresh. This claims to be for all skin types which I find difficult to believe as the toner is thick and mikly. Most toners are watery but this is more like a watered down milky moisturiser which I wasn’t used to. It did feel really smooth on the skin but I wouldn’t solely use this to remove your make-up because the lotion is too thick and seems to just push the dirt around, rather than remove dirty or make-up. I had to use more than 1 cotton pad to fully remove make-up, so I was using more and felt like a waste of money. It felt more moisturising and hydrating in comparison to others so this is why I find it difficult to believe this is for all skin types. For me, I like to switch from creams to serums for my night routine sometimes so when I tried this toner with my serums, it didn’t work too well. It left my skin slightly oily which I hate and took a longer time for my serum to soak in. Depending on your skin type this might work for you but it didn’t for me. The price is also slightly pricey so maybe get a sample bottle first to see if it will work with your skin or not.

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water

This brings me back to my teenage years where all I used was Garnier products. I bought this recently and was interested in the fact that it removes make-up, cleanses and soothes the skin without the need to rinse. A 2-in-1!!  The added benefit that it has no perfume and is dermatologically and ophthalmologically tested. You might not have heard about Ophthalmologically tested before and all it means is that the product won’t irritate the eyes because Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine which deals with the diseases and surgery of the eyes, brain, and areas surrounding the eye and eyelids. Make-up removal is easy especially with mascara which can be hard sometimes. I hope all women can relate when I say I hate removing mascara because of the burning or stinging sensation around the eyes from the rubbing. But this toner definitely doesn’t hurt the eyes which is amazing!! It is just like water and really cleans the face, I mean squeaky clean!!.  Price is really good and they have various sizes too, from 125ml travel size to a big 700ml bottle. The one big benefit is that this is like a face wash, make-up remover and cleanser in one so saves time and doesn’t require the need to rinse. All you need to do is, use a cotton pad with solution and wipe your face, finished with a moisturiser. EASY!! No more long regimes in the morning or evening so that means……. MORE SLEEP!!! Who doesn’t want more sleep??!!

Benefits (taken from www.garnier.co.uk)

  • Like a magnet, the cleansing agents capture and lift away dirt from the skin.
  • No need to rub to remove impurities and make-up.
  • The Result: Perfectly cleansed and refreshed skin without rubbing or rinsing.
  • Use in the morning to refresh skin. Use at night to remove make-up, cleanse and soothe.
  • Micellar Cleansing Water comes in a generous 400ml format for up to 200 uses.
Prices for Micellar water retails for £1.99 in 125ml bottle, £4.99 in 400ml bottle, £7.99 in 700ml bottle BUT are all on offer in Boots so go and save 1/3 off on selected Garnier.

Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic

Liz Earle is my all time favourite and never seems to fail me. The price point is slightly higher than Garnier but lower than Kiehl’s. Very good for price and would say that it does what it says on the tin. This instantly refreshes me in the mornings and really hydrates the skin. Toner is like water and a little goes a long way, so will last a while which is even better for value. Now you have to use this with the cleanser to get the deep clean and benefit from it all. In other words, I wouldn’t use it on its own as I don’t think you will get the full experience or benefit of the whole package. Once applied to the skin, it is very light and absorbent so your skin is left smooth and clean. You can use either cream or serum after as it’s so light. All ingredients are natural and is alcohol free and has no animal extracts, which you would be surprised about other brands. Liz Earle products are all made in Great Britain, UK and has always been known for their natural active ingredients. This is suitable for all skin types which is perfect and because it is light, so I can see why it can be for all skin types.

Benefits (taken from www.uk.lizearle.com)

  • Refresh, soothe and brighten the appearance of skin with this heavenly floral-scented, non-drying toner.
  • Gentle and alcohol-free, it provides an instant boost of hydration to leave skin radiantly healthy-looking.
  • Naturally active ingredients include aloe vera to hydrate, calendula, chamomile and cucumber to soothe and refresh, plus antioxidant vitamin E. This revitalising toner is fragranced with an uplifting blend of pure essential oils, including rose-scented geranium, lavender and sweet orange.
Prices: £6.00 for 30ml spirtzer, £6.00 for 50ml bottle, £20 for 200ml bottle & 30ml spritzer, x3 200ml bottles for £40.25, 200ml spritzer for £14.75, £14.50 for 200ml bottle

The Verdict

Kiehl’s wasn’t for me, due to the watery milky consistency being to thick for my skin so would make my face oily. Price is also a bit high and not affordable. So this comes in at 3rd place. For Garnier and Liz Earle I could easily give them both 1st place but that wouldn’t be fair. So, Liz Earle would be in at 2nd place, only because this needs to be used with the cleanser to get the full benefit of a clean and smooth face. But it does smell incredible and is still reasonable to afford. Whereas Garnier steals 1st place for being a 2-in-1, so a cleanser and a toner without needing to wash it off. It actually does what it says and is great for price, being really cheap. A lot goes a long way too, so will last a while, saving you more money.

  1. I started using witch hazel as my facial toner and it began irritating my skin, I had bumps on my face and more on my lips. I think I’ll try this toner instead.. Great post!
